Dondero began his work career in 1984 with JP Morgan & Chase and a year later he would landing a dream job at American Expres where he managed a billion dollars in funds from 1985 to 1989.
James Dondero would hold a variety of positions in the industry until finally deciding to start his Highland Capital Management investment firm in 1993 which has earned the distinction of becoming the largest alternative managers of credit in the world. Highland Capital specializes in hedge funds, private equity accounts, and a variety of other investment vehicles.
Mr. Dondero has, along with his many career and business accomplishments been dedicated to many philanthropic pursuits in the Dallas area and beyond.
One particular undertaking of Dondero in recent times is his support of the Dallas Zoo. The zoo was forced to give up its popular hippo habitat in 2001, following the death of Papa, the elderly hippo that was a favorite zoo resident for many. Despite the displeasure of Dallas residents, the Hippo habitat remained closed for nearly twenty years.

Once the Dallas Zoo made the decision to rebuild a more modernized habitat that would display the hippos it learned that the price tag associated with the project would be $14 million.
James Dondero donated $1 million of his own money to fund the efforts at developing the two-acre Simmons Hippo Outpost and was honored by the placement of a 5,000 square foot Highland Capital Management sign being placed in the outpost as well as having a section of the outpost named Highland Capital Lodge which has been made available to groups for private events. The new outpost is home to Adhama and Boipelo, the two charming hippos that have caused many new visitors to frequent the Dalla Zoo while providing area families with memories they will cherish for the rest of their lives.
